FIRE SAFETY TIPS

  • Check your smoke detector today - a smoke detector that doesn't work, will not save your or your families lives
  • Don't Play With Matches or Lighters! - these aren't toys, for kids or adults
  • Keep your house uncluttered - be safe, provide a safe way to crawl out or get out in a hurry by making sure walkways are clear of debris.
  • learn CPR - a CPR class will only take a few hours of your time, and could save someone's life!
  • Store gas away from children! - these materials should be stored in a locked container away from kids and there play areas!
  • Do Not Overload your electric outlets - an electrical outlet, extension cord or a power strip is only capable of handling a certain amount of power safely!! Overloading it can cause a fire!
  • Keep a fire extinguisher nearby - while it is important to have an extinguisher handy, 911 or the fire department should also be called, a small fire becomes a big fire very fast! Remember to get out if it's beyond your means!!
  • All fuses should be the right size - all fuses are set for a certain size, placing the wrong sized fuse is dangerous and can cause fire by overloading! If you're not sure what the right size is, call DTE or an electrician!
  • Never leave cooking unattended - many fires start in the kitchen, often with a careless cook! If you leave the cooking unattended you lose the time to stop the burning before it becomes a fire!
  • Never put water on a grease fire - the water intensifies the fire when it hits the burning grease!
  • Have your furnace inspected annually - are you safe from a Carbon Monoxide build up? Are you sure? The small price for an inspection is worth it!
  • do not run electric cords under carpeting - what you can't see can hurt you! The hidden wire can break or fray or become a trip hazard!
  • Check electric cords for frays or cracks  - a small hole can cause big damage! make sure to unplug before checking.
  • fire emergency line: 876-7777
  • Do you know to Stop, Drop & Roll? - this simple procedure is your guide to smothering the flames!
  • Install smoke alarms on every level in your home - remember to check the batteries and effectiveness of these alarms! If you cannot hear the alarm, it will not save your life!
  • Check your smoke detector today
