![]() Every Friday in October, your Hamtramck Firefighters will be wearing pink duty shirts in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This is part of a nationwide campaign by the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) supporting women in their fight against cancer. The “Cares Enough to Wear Pink” campaigns help raise money and awareness for the fight against breast cancer. For IAFF members, losing the blue and donning the pink is a way to support women in their fight against all cancers. Because many fire fighters have been affected by cancer, it’s been an important issue for IAFF members. “Sadly, cancer has affected all of us in one way or another,” says IAFF General President Harold Schaitberger. “I hope our membership will take this resolution to heart and help raise awareness and dollars for this important cause.” More info available here. |

We regret to inform all of our friends and patrons that the Hamtramck Firefighters will not be a part of the 2011 Hamtramck Labor Day Festival. Once again, the organizers have made it impossible for your Hamtramck Firefighters to take part in this event. As a part of the community for nearly 100 years and traditionally a large part of the Hamtramck Labor Day Festival, this disheartens all of us. This affects not just us firefighters - who look forward to meeting and greeting the community we serve; but also the public - who can meet their firefighters in a friendly setting and pick up our ‘World Famous’ chili, mugs & t-shirts. Most importantly, without our fundraising efforts we will not be able to support our charities to the level that we have in the past. During Labor Day Weekend we will be continue our ongoing efforts to support MDA (the Muscular Dystrophy Association) by collecting in front of the Hamtramck Firehouse on Caniff (at Mackay). We will also have a limited number of our t-shirts and mugs for sale at the station. Please take a second and stop in, say ‘hi,’ pick up a Hamtramck Firefighters mug or t-shirt and support MDA. . |

Hamtramck Firefighters Local #750 will be among the dedicated heroes raising funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) and will be out in the community on August 14th, 21st, and 28th at Jos. Campau/Holbrook and Caniff/Conant intersections. These dedicated heroes, with the generous support of the community members want to raise money in the quest to overcome this life changing disease. Committed to the eradication of neuromuscular diseases, the Michigan Professional Firefighters Union (MPFFU), members of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), is a longtime friend and supporter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Fill-the-Boot drives are the primary means by which the IAFF has raised $450 million for MDA since 1954. Last year, MPFFU locals raised $390,000 for MDA. For several years, MPFFU members in Hamtramck have hit the streets to bring help and hope to “Jerry’s Kids”. Fill-The-Boot funds support MDA’s services locally and nationally, including medical clinics staffed with specialists in muscle disease and accessible summer camps for kids. Local clinics and camps benefiting from Fill-the-Boot funds include Children’s Hospital in Detroit, the Michigan Institute for Neuromuscular Disorders (M.I.N.D.) in Farmington Hills, and 3 weeklong session of summer camp at Camp Cavell in Lexington. Local research is currently being performed at Michigan State University, Wayne State University and the University of Michigan. There are over 1,800 families affected within the Metro Detroit area. Founded in 1950, MDA is a voluntary health agency working to defeat more than 40 neuromuscular diseases through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive service, and far-reaching professional and public health education. The Association’s programs are funded almost entirely by individual private contributions. |

By Alan R. Madeleine (from Hamtramck Review) When Fallyn West, Head Coach of the Hamtramck High Lady Cosmos girls basketball team, first started searching for money to get her girls some T-shirts for warm-ups, it must’ve seemed like a half-court shot. Turns out that, with the help of the Hamtramck Firefighters Local 750, she was able to practically walk it down the lane for the jam. “I had an end-of-season meeting with my A.D., and then right after that I was driving out of the city, toward I-75, and saw the fire station,” West says. “I was inspired to stop in and talk to them.” It turns out the firefighters were just coming back from a run. It also turned out they were quite approachable on the issue, West said. “They were really nice. But, they did ask me to put the request in writing,” she continued. The fire station was the first place she thought to go to request a donation. Apparently, her instincts for this kind of thing are pretty good. “I went to them because of what they stand for,” West says. Once armed with a request in writing, it was an easier process to get the union to approve that request, notes Bill Diamond, Hamtramck Local 750 President. “We ended up approving $500 as a donation to the Lady Cosmos,” Diamond went on. “Rather than the T-shirts they had requested, they’re going to end up getting full warm-up suits. Our logo will appear on their bags, as well as on the right shoulders of the suits.” Asked what other things the union sponsors, he didn’t miss a beat. “The MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association) is, of course, our biggest recipient. On that note, we’re going to set up a table at every Hamtramck High home basketball game, the guys’ and the girls’ teams both, with our ‘Fill the Boot’ promotion.” Additionally, the firefighters of Local 750 have been involved lately with the fight against cystic fibrosis, largely because of a toddler here in town who is stricken with the disease. Their charity golf outing on June 12 will generate money they hope can go straight to that family. (more) |

The Hamtramck Firefighters have a very long and proud tradition of being a major part of the Hamtramck Labor Day Festival. Sadly, this year the Festival organizers have made it impossible for us to continue that nearly 30-year involvement. No “World Famous” chili will be available nor will anyone be sporting a 2010 Hamtramck Firefighters Mug or T-Shirt from our usual spot on Jos. Campau. It’s unfortunate that this year, organizers have refused to work with the Hamtramck Firefighters to help continue this tradition and relationship. We’ve been a part of the community for nearly 100 years and we continue to proudly protect lives and property in Hamtramck. Money we raise during Festival weekend helps the many charities we support throughout the year; we will do our best to make sure funds are still available for those that need our help. We’d like to thank our faithful patrons that come from all over and ask them to please check our website (hamtramckfirefighters.com) as we have several possibilities for alternate activities this Labor Day Weekend. HAMTRAMCK FIREFIGHTERS AGREE TO TAKE CONCESSIONS Package Saves City Money, Protects Lives and Saves Jobs The Hamtramck Firefighters Association have agreed to a one-year concession package with the city. Back in October 2009, City Manager William Cooper announced that the current economic situation had taken its toll and layoff s or concessions would be a necessity for all city departments. Under the worst case scenario outlined by Mr. Cooper, 16 firefighters would be laid off. Just this past October, the Hamtramck Firefighters signed a multi-year agreement that included totally revamping their holiday program. These changes alone would save the city over $90,000 annually. Despite that, the city is still reeling with American Axle’s shutdown, a drop in state revenue sharing and the expiration of a TIF agreement. We simply cannot provide the level of service that the citizens of Hamtramck deserve with manpower that low. The risk to the safety of residents and firefighters increases dramatically with lower staffing levels; Rather than risk lives and property, we opted to work out an agreement with city management. Hamtramck Firefighters officials met with the city manager several times and proposed concessions that would save the city money without cutting staffing levels. Hamtramck Firefighters President Bill Dickens said of the new agreement “in these trying times, we thought it would be in everyone’s best interest to work with the city and Mr. Cooper rather than risk the safety and well being of the people of Hamtramck. The same great fire protection and EMS care that the people of Hamtramck expect and deserve will continue and we look forward to a brighter tomorrow for Hamtramck.” Read the Press Release |

On Sunday December 2nd, 2008 fire struck A&R Packing on Andrus & Lumpkin streets. E-1, E-2 and R-1 responded with the on duty unit 1 crew. An "all hands" call-in crew of firefighters spent the night at the scene fighting the blace with assistance from Highland Park. From the Detroit Free Press (also see WXYZ-TV) Fire destroyed part of a Hamtramck pork processing plant, forcing firefighters to battle the blaze surrounded by pigs’ feet and hocks. Members of a four-person cleaning crew at A and R Packing, 2211 Andrus, noticed smoke coming from the roof in the back corner of the building at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Hamtramck Fire Capt. Ron Cichecki said. They tried to douse the area of the more than 40-year-old building with a fire extinguisher. But flames quickly spread through the facility, which cleans, smokes and packages pigs’ feet, hocks and necks and other pork products. Most of a storage and processing building was destroyed, Cichecki said. But the building across the alley, just east of I-75 near the Holbrook exit, that houses the plant’s refrigeration equipment was undamaged, he said. Click here for photos from Dennis Walus. Our deepest condolences to the friends and family of Walt Harris. The Detroit firefighter was killed in the line of duty at a house fire on November 15th, 2008. He was stationed just south of Hamtramck at Detroit Engine Company #23.From the Detroit Free Press: Detroit firefighter. Husband. Father of six. Minister. Motorcyclist. Real estate agent. Mentor. Mediator. Engine-house cook. Walter Harris was a busy man, and his family and friends say those descriptions only begin to capture someone they remember wrapping his huge arms around them in loving hugs, shaking with loud belly laughs and asking, before meals: “You mind if we say grace?” His son, James Hill Harris, also a Detroit firefighter, said his father was “big, strong, a protector. He showed me what a real man is.” Harris, 37, died early Saturday morning when a roof collapsed on him during a fire in a vacant house on Detroit’s east side. Officials said the blaze was deliberately set. Four other firefighters were treated and released at Receiving Hospital. Harris was a 17-year DFD veteran who had spent his entire career in the 109-year-old station on E. Grand Boulevard west of Mt. Elliott that houses Rescue Squad 3 and Engine Co. 23. He was to have been promoted to sergeant in the coming weeks. From Michigan Professional Fire Fighters: We regret to inform you of the death of Walter P. If you happen live in a house that was built before the 1970s, there’s a good chance that asbestos was used in its construction. Even if your house was built since then, asbestos may still be found in some areas. In fact, only houses built within the last 10 years or so should be free of insulating asbestos, although it could very easily have been used in other forms. This knowledge may instill fear in many homeowners, but, a little knowledge can reduce anxiety. Once the background and use of asbestos is known, the homeowner should be able to recognize potentially dangerous situations. After being informed about the ways in which asbestos must be safely handled, the homeowner can be assured that proper safeguards are being taken. With widely prevalent asbestos use in construction during the early part of the 1900’s, and in hundreds of products since then, it’s been the subject of much research. Much has been learned about it and the threats it can pose. Inhalation of asbestos is the only known cause of pleural mesothelioma, a rare cancer that affects the lining of the lungs. We have posted the entire Arbitration Award from the American Arbitration Association's arbitrator, E.R. Scales. The case centered around seven central issues which were awarded to the Hamtramck Firefighters, three of these issues were conceded to by the city and settlement was stated for the record; the remaining issues centered on Minimum Manning, Chain of Command, Motor Engineer Pay, Holiday/Birthday/Emergency Day Pay and Accumulated Time Off clauses in the contract ratified in February 2006. The Hamtramck Firefighters Executive Board worked very diligently to negotiate an amicable settlement with city officials before consistent, flagrant violations of our contract continued and escalated. Our current agreement with the city was ratified February 13, but largely ignored by city manager Don Crawford and Chief Jim Szafarczyk until June 21 when they reduced the ranks of the already depleted Fire Department to 14 by laying off 6 firefighters. |

To try to help offset that, Hamtramck Firefighters Association President Mark Swider has volunteered to be "locked up" by the Greater Detroit West Chapter of MDA.On March 22, Mark will be "locked up" by MDA Officials along with other area people in effort to raise awareness and money for what we've come to lovingly call "Jerry's Kids." Funds raised for MDA will remain local to provide help and hope to families that are affected with one of the 10 neuromuscular diseases covered by MDA. They provide payments and repairs on wheelchairs, leg braces and send children to MDA Summer Camp. All of these services are provided at no cost to those that have been diagnosed with a neuromuscular disease with help from contributions from you! You can donate online at the secure MDA site located here! That site is protected by Verisign, using 128 bit SSL Encryption! You can also Download and mail (or deliver to the firehouse) a donation form here (or here in Word format). |

Effective June 21, 2006 your Fire Department has been reduced by an additional 25%. On June 21st Chief James Szafarczyk handed out layoff notices to six of your firefighters. First Louis Schimmel reduced your Fire Department by 34%. And on June 21st (without notice) Don Crawford, (city manager) reduced manpower by an additional 25%. The citizens of Hamtramck deserve and pay for a professional Fire Department. You expect quick and efficient response in your time of need. Overtime will go up causing fire fighter fatigue, resulting in line of duty injury. When homes are burning, children are choking, when loved ones are having heart attacks seconds count. The firefighters of this city can always be counted on. Now we need your help! Voice your concern at the next council meeting Tuesday June 27th. We will be meeting in Zussman Park (across from City Hall) at 6:15 PM. Please call your Mayor and City Council: 313-876-7700 |

"As your City Council President I demanded a fully-staffed, fully-equipped full-time Fire Department. And I ask that you will join me in demanding the highest possible levels of Public Safety.""If we don't hire some bodies, it will be extremely difficult to operate." "...his attempt to gut the fire department while wearing down the remaining firefighters with overtime show that he is concerned neither with the pblic safety of the residents of Hamtramck nor, ironcially with protecting the city budget." "With public safety, I think it is important to work to alleviate the burden of overtime within our fire and police services and find adequate funds to hire more and pay overtime less." "...we do not to destroy our fire department to make it affordable. The immediate answer is to reduce overtime and use the savings to hire firefighters." "We can reduce the overtime and eliminate jobs in the city government that are not vital and put more police officers and firefighters on the streets." It is the staff of the state and the governor through her appointment of Lou Schimmel that prevents us from answering the staffing crisis in the fire department." "It is clear that we have the money in the budget now to hire more firefighters." "..the state appointed negotiation team is bent on destroying our ability to provide public safety." "You end up paying money up from to save money down the line." "SOLIDARITY SUPPORTS THE FIRE DEPARTMENT" "That's the kind of support for a well-eqipped and fully staffed fire department you can expect when you elect... Ahmed... Cedar and Klein to council." "Majewski and candidates for 4 year terms on council Rob Cedar.. and Scott Klein know the price of peace of mind is a well equipped and staffed fire department." Other priorities mentioned on Nowakowski's election flyer include re-establishing block organizations and Neighborhood Watch, and rehiring police and fire personnel. |

On June 21st, Hamtramck City Manager Donald Crawford laid off 6 Hamtramck Firefighters. This move incredibly jeopardizes the lives and property of the citizens of Hamtramck. These layoffs were made despite the recommendations of state appointed Emergency Financial Manager Louis Schimmel. This brings the number of the already drastically diminished staffing of active firefighter suppression personnel to 14. With our mandatory 7-man per day minimum, overtime costs will sky rocket dramatically. All furlough and leave days have already been ordered canceled. No other city departments have been affected by this "emergency financial crisis." |
