Firefighters rescued an infant, two toddlers and three women from the porch of a burning home in Hamtramck early today.
When crews arrived on the 2100 block of Trowbridge at 3:30 a.m. after a 911 call about a garage fire, they discovered the blaze had engulfed the back of the house, too, Hamtramck Fire Captain Christopher Sanchez said today.
Hamtramck Fire Fighters responded to Jos. Campau and Commor Streets – home of the ‘Polish Market.’ The fire originated in the basement and quickly spread and engulfed the entire structure. Hamtramck, who arrived with a six man crew called for mutual aid assistance from both neighboring Detroit and Highland Park. Off duty Hamtramck personnel were also called in to assist.
Three Hamtramck fire fighters were hospitalized – one remained hospitalized for several days. All three returned to full duty.

A spectacular five-alarm fire raged through an industrial complex in Hamtramck, Michigan, on August 6, 1984, causing $9 million in damages. The size of the structure, severe water problems and the hazardous and flammable contents of the building forced firefighters to withdraw from defensive positions after the fire grew completely out of control. The blaze destroyed over 100 classic cars stored in the complex.
