Hamtramck Fire Fighters responded to Jos. Campau and Commor Streets – home of the ‘Polish Market.’ The fire originated in the basement and quickly spread and engulfed the entire structure. Hamtramck, who arrived with a six man crew called for mutual aid assistance from both neighboring Detroit and Highland Park. Off duty Hamtramck personnel were also called in to assist.
Three Hamtramck fire fighters were hospitalized – one remained hospitalized for several days. All three have returned to full duty.
Hamtramck is under control of the state of Michigan and at the time of the fire had six fire fighters laid off – while most other city departments went untouched.
The ‘Polish Market’ has been a staple of the Hamtramck area for many years carrying many goods originating from Poland. Several people lived in the apartments above the market, all residents and employees were able to escape unharmed.
