Everyday, seven people die in a house fire. Children and the elderly are those most likely to lose their lives.

Smoke alarms save lives. Having a properly installed and working smoke alarm increases your chances of surviving a house fire by nearly half. It is estimated that almost 900 deaths per years could saved if all homes had working smoke alarms.

Michigan law requires UL listed smoke alarms in every home. They should be installed in each bedroom, outside of each sleeping area and in each floor of a home. If you do not have a smoke alarm, you can request from the Red Cross (click here).

Smoke spreads fast in a house fire and a smoke alarms can give you the time you need to get out quick. Make sure you that your home is properly equipped and that your family – especially kids are instructed on what to do when one goes off.

More U.S. fires are reported on the 4th of July than any other day. Every year, thousands of people are treated in Emergency Rooms for firework related injuries. In 2015, 11 people were killed using fireworks over the holiday and almost 12,000 were treated for injuries.  The safest way to celebrate is attend a public firework show.

You can fire your legal, store-bought fireworks on federal holidays including the 4th of July – and the day before and the day after that holiday.   You cannot set off fireworks in parks, parking lots, or on public property.  You must be 18 years or older to buy and use fireworks and you can’t be under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.

If you must ignite fireworks, here are some tips:

  • Never allow children to use fireworks.
  • Alcohol and fireworks do not mix.
  • Follow label warnings and use common sense.
  • Hamtramck houses are very close to one another, avoid using fireworks nearby.
  • Have water ready – either a large bucket or a hose.
  • Light one firework at a at time.
  • Never relight a firework!
  • Properly dispose of spent fireworks – soak them in water.
  • Do not use fireworks in windy or dry conditions.

On May 5, 2018 the Hamtramck Firefighters celebrated the 100th Anniversary of our current home – the Hamtramck Firehouse on Mackay and Caniff.  The firehouse was built in 1918 and was known as “House 2.” In the mid-1970s, House 2 became our sole home when “House 1” (located on Jos. Campau and Grayling) was closed.  To celebrate the centennial, we had a luncheon prior to the St. Florian Firefighter March & Mass.

We’d like to give a huge THANK YOU to Srodek’s Quality Polish Food, Polish Village Cafe and Edie, Jenn & Michele for helping make this event a huge success.

We are selling t-shirts to commemorate the centennial of our home on “Caniff & Mackay.”  You can pre-order a t-shirt by clicking here.  Pre-orders are only being taken until May 15th, delivery is expected in early June.

You can view pictures from both the 100th Anniversary Celebration and the 20th Annual St. Florian Firefighter March here. Thanks to Joanie Wilding for her photographs.

As the warmer weather sets in, the grills come out.  Here are some grill safety tips to consider will cooking outdoors.

  • Grills should only be used outside – not on a porch, balcony or inside at all.
  • Your grill should be placed at least 10 feet away from any building and clear of overhangs including trees and branches.
  • Make sure your grill is clear of windows.
  • Keep children and pets away from the grill area.
  • Clean your grill before and after every use.
  • Never leave your grill unattended.
  • Never use gasoline on a grill.
  • Never add lighter fluid or fuel to an already lit grill.
  • If you smell gas, turn off your grill immediately!
  • Do not turn on or light a gas grill with the lid closed.
