08/28/2009: "STERLING OIL FIRE"

On Thursday morning, August 27th the Hamtramck Firefighters were on a scheduled tour of St. Florian church. From the bell tower, smoke was spotted and within minutes they were on scene at Sterling Oil. Located in the city's northeast side, Sterling Oil houses and blends industrial lubricants including hydraulic oils, greases and petroleum products for other companies such as Dow and ExxonMobil.
Soon after arrival, an "all hands in" call was made for all off duty personnel and mutual aid was requested from Highland Park and Detroit. Area residents, including those from the neighboring Col. Hamtramck Housing were evacuated and railroad traffic was interrupted. A multitude of agencies including the DEQ and the EPA were called in for clean up. The fire was under control and contained within several hours.
